    We describe how reference filter characteristics (unexposed weights) can influence instrument-reported attenuation (thereby black carbon concentrations) using the OT21 (SootScan Optical Transmissometer), in the case of Emfab filters. Reference filters (unexposed filters) with higher unexposed weights (pre-weights) compared to that of sample filters are found to reduce the instrument-reported aerosol sample attenuation measurement; reference filters weighing less than the sample filter results in the reverse outcome. This sensitivity can lead to significant under- and over-estimation by the instrument (estimated mean absolute error: ∼ 10 and 16 ATN units for infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) channels, respectively, in our tests, which represent 44% and 15% errors, respectively). We find that the error is linear with respect to difference in the unexposed filter weights of the sample and reference filters. We report two equations (one for IR, one for UV) for correcting the Transmissometer output based on experimental data, which allow use of any unexposed Emfab filter as the reference filter; application of correction parameters to data here reduces the error to 2 and 3 ATN units, respectively, for IR and UV (10% and 3% errors, respectively).     Resumen: Antecedentes y objetivo: Disponer de datos epidemiológicos y de carga de una enfermedad es crucial para su control y óptima planificación. El objetivo es estimar la carga de la psoriasis en términos epidemiológicos, las comorbilidades asociadas, el uso de recursos sanitarios y la incapacidad laboral. Material y método: Se han analizado los datos de la encuesta de salud de Cataluña (ESCA) del 2016, el registro de morbilidad y utilización de servicios sanitarios de Cataluña (MUSSCAT) del 2016 y los datos recopilados entre el 2012 y el 2016 del sistema integrado de gestión de la incapacidad temporal (IT) del Instituto Catalán de Evaluaciones Médicas. Resultados: La prevalecía de la psoriasis en Cataluña con base en los datos de la ESCA se sitúa en el 1,8%.Los datos del MUSSCAT muestran que el número de casos incidentes se ha mantenido estable en los últimos años. Las comorbilidades más frecuentes en el paciente con psoriasis son la hipertensión arterial (35%) y la diabetes (15%). La estratificación de la población con psoriasis por niveles de riesgo situó al 40% en riesgo moderado-alto. El uso anual de recursos sanitarios de las personas con psoriasis es elevado (8,7 visitas de atención primaria; 2,8 consultas externas; 0,5 de urgencias y hospital de día; 0,2 de salud mental y 6,1 medicamentos).Los procesos de IT asociados con la psoriasis o artropatía psoriásica representaron el 0,04% del total de registros. Conclusiones: La prevalencia de la psoriasis en Cataluña es del 1,8%. La carga de la enfermedad es elevada, tanto en términos de comorbilidades del paciente como en el requerimiento del uso de recursos. Abstract: Background and objectives: Epidemiologic and disease burden data are essential for disease control and optimal health care resource planning. The aims of this study were to estimate the epidemiologic burden of psoriasis and evaluate associated comorbidities, health care utilization, and sick leave. Material and methods: We collected data from the 2016 Catalan Health Survey (ESCA), the Catalan Registry of Morbidity and Utilization of Health Care Services (MUSSCAT) (2016), and the database of the Catalan Medical Evaluations Institute (ICAM) (2012–2016). Results: The prevalence of psoriasis in Catalonia according to 2016 ESCA data is approximately 1.8%.The MUSSCAT registry data indicate that the incidence has remained stable in recent years. The most common comorbidities associated with psoriasis are hypertension (35%) and diabetes (15%). Forty percent of patients with psoriasis have a moderate to high risk for death or high health resource utilization. Annual use of resources by psoriasis patients is high: they make a mean of 8.7 primary care visits, 2.8 outpatient visits, 0.5 emergency and day hospital visits, 0.2 mental health visits, and use 6.1 medications.Sick leave due to psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis accounted for 0.04% of all cases. Conclusions: The prevalence of psoriasis in Catalonia is high at 1.8%. The disease burden is also high, both in terms of comorbidities and health care utilization.

We sought to evaluate circulating HGF levels in SCLC patients and assess correlation with outcome and EMT features in the tumor. Serum samples from patients with SCLC were prospectively obtained at diagnosis, response evaluation and progression. HGF serum (sHGF) was quantified by ELISA. EMT markers and p-Met/Met were assayed by immunohistochemistry in tumor samples. Clinical data were prospectively recorder. One-hundred twelve patients were included. High baseline levels of sHGF were associated with shorter overall survival (p=0.007) and remained independently associated with survival in the multivariate analysis (p=0.016). For stage IV patients, an increase of sHGF levels at response evaluation (p=0.042) and at progression (p=0.003) were associated with poor outcome. sHGF levels were associated (p<0.05) with a mesenchymal phenotype in the tumor. In conclusion, high sHGF at diagnosis and increases during the course of the disease predict for poor outcome in SCLC patients and associate with EMT in the tumor. These data provide novel evidence on a role of sHGF in the adverse clinical behavior of SCLC and support testing Met inhibitors in patients with high sHGF.

    Background: There are many different techniques for reducing acute anterior dislocations of the shoulder, and their use depends on surgeon preference. The objective of this study was to compare the pain experienced by a patient performing a self-reduction technique with the pain felt during a reduction performed by a trained physician. Methods: The study was carried out at the emergency department of a tertiary referral center. Patients between 18 and 60 years of age with an acute anterior shoulder dislocation were randomly allocated into 2 groups. In 1 group the emergency doctor actively guided the reduction process with the Spaso technique (Sp group), and in the other group the patient used the Boss-Holzach-Matter (also known as Davos or Aronen) self-reduction technique (BHM group). The pain experienced by the patient during the reduction was recorded by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 10. Other recorded data included demographic characteristics, reduction time, and success rate. Results: Of 378 patients assessed for eligibility from May 2015 until February 2017, 197 did not meet the inclusion criteria, 58 met exclusion criteria, 22 declined to participate, and 41 withdrew before randomization. Sixty acute anterior shoulder dislocations were randomized into the Sp group (n = 30) or the BHM group (n = 30). The BHM group experienced significantly less pain during reduction than the Sp group (p = 0.047), with mean pain scores of 3.57 (standard deviation [SD] = 2.1]) and 5.26 (SD = 2.9), respectively. No significant difference between groups was found with respect to reduction time (105 seconds [range, 10 to 660 seconds] in the Sp group and 90 seconds [range, 5 to 600 seconds] in the BHM group; p = 0.6) or success rate (67% and 77%, respectively; p = 0.39). Conclusions: The self-reduction technique results in less pain than, and is as efficient in achieving reduction of anterior shoulder dislocations as, the Spaso technique. These findings favor the use of the self-assisted method as an effective first-line treatment for shoulder dislocations seen in the emergency department as well as its use by patients with recurrent dislocation.     Treball de fi de màster en Lingüística Teòrica i Aplicada. Director: Dr Wolfram Hinzen The autism spectrum comprises a substantial 30% of individuals said to be non- or minimally verbal. While these produce no phrase-speech by definition, they often do vocalize. However, their exact vocal repertoires remain unknown. The present study aimed to advance on this front by developing a new annotation scheme for nine such individuals, adapting categories used to profile pre-verbal neurotypical children. In a second step, vocalization variables were related to microstructural metrics (fractional anisotropy, FA, and myelin water fraction, MWF) of a crucial white-matter speech-related tract, the arcuate fasciculus (AF). Results revealed that at a group level, participants produced significantly more syllabic, or speechlike, than non- syllabic vocalizations. The proportion of words marginally exceeded that of word approximations. Furthermore, the vowel and consonant repertoire resembled that of neurotypical infants. There were no significant correlations between vocalization and either FA or MWF in the AF. These new findings refute the expectation that vocalizations in individuals with NMVA are predominantly non-speech-like and substantiate the need to look for the neural basis of NMVA also in non-speech-related language territory in the brain.

    We briefly review how microbial biotechnology can contribute to improve activities aiming to restore degraded drylands and to combat their desertification, which are an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goal 15 of the 2030 Agenda. Microbial biotechnology offers notable promise to improve restoration actions based on the use of biocrust-forming engineered cyanobacteria, which play key roles in maintaining ecosystem structure and functioning in drylands worldwide. Advances in our understanding of microbiome associated to biocrusts and of the signalling involved in the communication among their constituents can also potentially enhance the outcome of restoration activities in drylands. L’anàlisis es durà a terme a partir del cas Barcelona, observant el període que va des de 1983, quan comença l’etapa de projectes olímpics per a les olimpíades de 1992 i la ciutat es projecta de forma internacional, fins a l’actualitat, on la marca de la ciutat es troba en una etapa madura i Barcelona és coneguda arreu del món. La recerca conclourà amb l’anàlisi de la recollida de dades qualitatives que respondran a l’objectiu principal d’aquesta recerca, la qual busca conèixer l’opinió dels barcelonins respecte qüestions relacionades amb la responsabilitat social de la Marca Barcelona. This study analyzes the social responsibility of city branding, in particular the processes of gentrification those practices may entail. The analysis will be carried out from the Barcelona case, observing the period from 1983, when the stage of Olympic projects for the 1992 Olympics begins and the city is projected internationally, until today, where the city's brand is in a mature stage and Barcelona is known all around the world. The research will conclude with the analysis of the collection of qualitative data that will respond to the main objective of this research, which seeks to know the opinion of the people of Barcelona regarding issues related to the social responsibility of the Barcelona Brand.

    Comunicació presentada a 4th International Conference on Higher Education Learning Methodologies and Technologies Online, celebrat del 21 al 23 de setembre de 2022 a Palerm, Itàlia. Social media platforms provide opportunities for users across the world to connect and communicate between them and engage into acts of social support and entertainment. Yet it can also bring negative consequences as it has been associated with poor mental health and life dissatisfaction. This underlines the importance of delivering social media literacy (SML) interventions that raise awareness of the dangers and threats that are hidden within. To this date, SML initiatives have shown their benefits towards the acquisition of SML skills through the forms of school interventions and mini-games. However, studies on promoting SML through social media platforms need to be also encouraged and innovative approaches to provide interactive scenarios with hands-on experiences need to be formulated. Hence, the project COURAGE introduces a new approach towards SML by proposing the integration of educational opportunities within a controlled social media platform. To provide students the opportunity to learn whilst they naturally explore social media we propose the integration of virtual learning companions. In this paper we report seven empirical approaches towards SML skills acquisition powered by virtual learning companions. The paper concludes with a discussion towards the benefits and limitations of using this type of SML interventions.     Cancer patients (CPs) have been identified as particularly vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and therefore are a priority group for receiving COVID-19 vaccination. From the patients with advanced solid tumors, about 20% respond very efficiently to immunotherapy with anti-PD1/PD-L1 antibodies and achieve long lasting cancer responses. It is unclear whether an efficient cancer-specific immune response may also correlate with an efficient response upon COVID-19 vaccination. Here, we explored the antiviral immune response to the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 in a group of 11 long-lasting cancer immunotherapy responders. We analysed the development of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG serum antibodies, virus neutralizing capacities and T cell responses. Control groups included patients treated with adjuvant cancer immunotherapy (IMT, cohort B), CPs not treated with immunotherapy (no-IMT, cohort C) and healthy controls (cohort A). The median ELISA IgG titers significantly increased after the prime-boost COVID vaccine regimen in all cohorts (Cohort A: pre-vaccine = 900 (100-2700), 3 weeks (w) post-boost = 24300 (2700-72900); Cohort B: pre-vaccine = 300 (100-2700), 3 w post-boost = 8100 (300-72900); Cohort C: pre-vaccine = 500 (100-2700), 3 w post-boost = 24300 (300-72900)). However, at the 3 w post-prime time-point, only the healthy control group showed a statistically significant increase in antibody levels (Cohort A = 8100 (900-8100); Cohort B = 900 (300-8100); Cohort C = 900 (300-8100)) (P < 0.05). Strikingly, while all healthy controls generated high-level antibody responses after the complete prime-boost regimen (Cohort A = 15/15 (100%), not all CPs behaved alike [Cohort B= 12/14 (84'6%); Cohort C= 5/6 (83%)]. Their responses, including those of the long-lasting immunotherapy responders, were more variable (Cohort A: 3 w post-boost (median nAb titers = 95.32 (84.09-96.93), median Spike-specific IFN-γ response = 64 (24-150); Cohort B: 3 w post-boost (median nAb titers = 85.62 (8.22-97.19), median Spike-specific IFN-γ response (28 (1-372); Cohort C: 3 w post-boost (median nAb titers = 95.87 (11.8-97.3), median Spike-specific IFN-γ response = 67 (20-84)). Two long-lasting cancer responders did not respond properly to the prime-boost vaccination and did not generate S-specific IgGs, neutralizing antibodies or virus-specific T cells, although their cancer immune control persisted for years. Thus, although mRNA-based vaccines can induce both antibody and T cell responses in CPs, the immune response to COVID vaccination is independent of the capacity to develop an efficient anti-cancer immune response to anti PD-1/PD-L1 antibodies.     Melatonin plays multiple physiological roles in the human body. Evaluation of melatonin production by the determination of urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin in 24-h samples has important drawbacks which hinder the successful evaluation of melatonin production in large cohorts. Here, we evaluated the potential of nail analysis for estimating melatonin production. Firstly, mass spectrometry methodology for the determination of melatonin in nails was optimized and successfully validated. The method was found to be linear in the range 6.5&ndash 100 days in both volunteers. Our results suggest that melatonin determination in nails is a suitable non-invasive tool for the estimation of global melatonin production. Due to the easy collection and storage of nails, the long-term information obtained and the multiple functions of melatonin, nail melatonin content might complement dim light melatonin onset, which is commonly measured from plasma/saliva samples, paving the way for melatonin research. 0.001). Additionally, we showed that fingernails are preferable to toenails to determine nail melatonin content. Finally, fingernails collected for 180 days after melatonin administration (two volunteers, 1.9 mg/night during 5 days) were analyzed.     Author summary To fulfil their function, proteins need to interact with each other forming complexes. Understanding how pathogen proteins bind their host counterparts is important to explain how bacteria can infect, survive and proliferate inside cells. To achieve that, pathogen proteins mimic eukaryote interfaces to interact with the host. However, we discovered that such mimicry is imperfect, and pathogen proteins display particular features that are not found in eukaryotic complexes. This imperfect mimicry would allow pathogen proteins to actively bind to the host targets while preventing deleterious effects on the pathogen network. Indeed, we show that highly connected proteins (hubs) in the host-pathogen networks are mostly isolated in the pathogen network. The existence of imperfect mimicry opens the door to the design of new molecules aimed to target host-pathogen complexes with reduced side effects. Hence, in the long term, our results may lay the foundation of a new class of antimicrobials. Bacteria use protein-protein interactions to infect their hosts and hijack fundamental pathways, which ensures their survival and proliferation. Hence, the infectious capacity of the pathogen is closely related to its ability to interact with host proteins. Here, we show that hubs in the host-pathogen interactome are isolated in the pathogen network by adapting the geometry of the interacting interfaces. An imperfect mimicry of the eukaryotic interfaces allows pathogen proteins to actively bind to the host’s target while preventing deleterious effects on the pathogen interactome. Understanding how bacteria recognize eukaryotic proteins may pave the way for the rational design of new antibiotic molecules.

    Exploramos aquí los conceptos de literacidad y de crítica, o de lectura y escritura de ideologías, tomando "ideología” como el posicionamiento que hace un autor en su texto sobre cualquier cuestión (política, social, deportiva, etc.). Analizamos el campo semántico de ambos conceptos, sus raíces filosóficas, pedagógicas y lingüísticas, y los vocablos usados en varios idiomas para denominarlos. Formulamos finalmente la distinción teórica entre un lector crítico y acrítico, a partir de las aportaciones del Análisis Crítico del Discurso, y lo ejemplificamos con el caso de un cartel político de 5 palabras.
